Niihara International was founded to address the unmet needs of patients living with sickle cell disease, a genetic blood disorder characterized by chronic pain, recurrent hospitalizations, and shortened life expectancy.
Our founder, Dr. Yutaka Niihara, is the principal inventor of pharmaceutical L-glutamine therapy for sickle cell disease. His research began at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he and his colleagues identified a novel way to reduce oxidative stress in red blood cells—one of the key drivers of sickle cell complications .
This research led to the development of L-glutamine as a therapeutic intervention for sickle cell disease, culminating in U.S. FDA approval in 2017. Clinical trials demonstrated both safety and efficacy, with significant reductions in pain crises, hospitalizations, and acute chest syndrome.
Subsequent follow-up studies and real-world clinical use have reinforced these findings, establishing L-glutamine as a cornerstone therapy for sickle cell disease management.
While sickle cell disease remains central to our mission, Niihara International is now focused on broader challenges in global access to essential medicines. In many regions, reductions in international aid and fragmented pharmaceutical supply chains have created critical gaps in medication availability.
To address this, we are advancing:
Our work reflects a belief that scientific innovation must be matched by delivery innovation to truly improve global health.
